Rack jack
The products of the Herion-Linner Group have been in successful use for many years. Rack jacks are at home wherever demanding tasks call for synchronous, precise, dynamic and powerful motion. They are used across many industries as reliable, proven components, and their long service life makes them stand out in particular.

The existing standard modular system is an enormous help for every design engineer, as it allows you to make use of the wide range of application and combination options. From the standard range, module sizes 1 – 3 are available at short notice, module sizes 4 – 6 on request.
In addition to our standard range, we manufacture rack jacks to your requirements. Please send us your enquiry with details of the application; we will be happy to advise you on design, engineering and manufacturing options.
Variants and customisation
- Design and complete manufacture of customer-specific rack jacks (with regard to performance, travel speeds, stroke, connection of several lifting elements, etc.)
- Individual housing versions
- Custom-made pinion shafts for different connection options, e.g. internal profiles of the pinion shaft or shaft ends produced to customer specification and drawing
- Rack lengths and end machining to customer specification and drawing
- Protective cover for the rack (individual; adapted to the stroke length)

How a rack jack works
The round rack jack lets you implement simple synchronous lifting movements. The system of rack and pinion shaft converts linear movement into rotary movement and vice versa. The force-fit connection between several jacks or between the drive components is provided by profiled shafts.
The round rack jack is available with one rack or, optionally, with two racks. In the double version, the racks move in opposite directions. This simple basic mechanical principle ensures trouble-free, durable and reliable operation of the products.
Thanks to their compact design in robust square housings, the jacks are particularly insensitive to external influences.
Characteristics of a rack jack
- Simple and cost-effective lifting devices
- Robust design for a long service life and permanent use
- High bending stiffness thanks to the large diameter and wide toothing of the rack
- Robust sliding guide for the rack
- Simple design, high repeat accuracy
- Medium lifting speed, precise positioning in the lifting direction
- Practical performance graduation across 6 sizes from 800 N – 160,000 N lifting force
- Identical shape and operating principle for all sizes
- Numerous mounting options including flange connection
- 4 pinion shaft versions available for each of sizes 1 to 3; from size 4 upwards, manufactured to customer specification
- Housing in aluminium (sizes 1 to 3) or as a welded steel construction (from size 4 upwards)
Areas of application for a rack jack
- Lifting flanging tools and fixtures in and out
- Raising frames of all kinds
- Feed devices (drawer principle or similar)
- Feeding of nozzles, suction cups, etc.
- Gripper and closing movement
- Serial width adjustment
- Lifting columns for raising and lowering conveyor belts or other conveying equipment
- Height-adjustable swivel devices
- Turning systems and tilting devices
- Lifting tables for raising car bodies in the automotive industry
- Lifting tables with different superstructures, such as roller conveyors and clamping frames in automotive production
- Centring and pushing together drinks bottles in filling technology
- Pushing parcels in and feeding them in the packaging industry
- Pushing on packaging units
- and much more
Rack jacks with double toothing
The rack jack with double toothing takes the concept of the classic rack jack a step further. Because the rack is designed with toothing on both sides, up to twice the load can be transmitted with the same rack diameter, while the moving mass of the rack is kept comparatively low. This is an advantage above all in applications with faster, short and dynamic strokes, as the moving mass is lower.
In addition, introducing the forces into the rack from both sides gives a very balanced force distribution and thus reduces the load values acting on the plain bearing of the round rack. This significantly increases the service life of the components and hence of the entire rack jack.
Compared with hydraulic cylinders, too, the rack jack with double toothing proves to be an advantageous alternative: if you compare the rack diameter with the piston diameter of the hydraulic cylinder, higher forces can be transmitted – at the usual hydraulic cylinder pressures.
